If you are a movie buff like me and go the legal way of buying movies on DVDs then surely one thing does bug you regarding these DVDs- the protection that comes on them that prevents you from copying these videos to your hard drive. Before we proceed with the tutorial let me give a little know how on the working of this software:

Tutorial for conversion of DVD to AVI with DVDFab DVD Ripper


  1. Download DVDFab from DVDFab DVD Ripper.

  2. Download the free version if you want to give the software a try first otherwise buy it.

  3. Launch the program. Take care that you have an active internet connection so that the software can register the program.

  4. Select DVD Ripper option

  6. Click on the Disc icon to locate the DVD files or drag and drop the file on the screen.

  7. You should get a screen as shown in the figure.

    You can select the profile of the output file or select a preset by clicking on the icon on the left side of “Profile" and “Save to" which is showing a Windows Media icon. Here you have the option of customizing the format of your audio file. You can even convert your DVD file into a 3D format viewable on some of the 3D tablets in the market. We have selected the format of avi xvid with mp3 audio.

  9. If you want crop the whole video you can even do that. Click on the Edit button in the top which will allow you to do all frame related settings including crop to a sub picture.

  11. Similarly, if you want to customise the profile of the output file just click on the Advanced Settings and you can customise the encoding, video quality, frame rate and more.

  12. Once you are done customizing just click on Start to let DVD Ripper do its magic. Meanwhile, you can preview your video too to make sure you are having the just right output of your favorite DVD videos.

  13. A dialogue box with alert you regarding the completion of the conversion process and you are done. As you can see it took around 9 minutes to convert a protected VOB movie file into AVI with this tool. We got an excellent quality back up of our video and no complaints here!

Some other features worth mentioning


We did not get much into customization because we did not need them and also because there are just too many customization tools here which are not possible to list completely. However, we will be summarizing the other features which we could not mention in the tutorial.

  • Select conversion segment: If you require only a part of the video to be converted like for concerts then you can select the start and finish point and only that part will be included in the output file.

  • Customize video parameters: You can customize video and audio bitrate, frame size (resolution), frame rate, deinterlacing, aspect ratio, image cropping with preview so that you can see in real time what your customization will do on the video size and bitrate.

  • Customize audio parameters: Bit rate, audio and channel can be customized.

  • Set output audio tracks and subtitles: You can choose your own audio tracks and decide whether you want the subtitles to render directly to video or extract to idx/sub files.
