Web Services Enhancements (WSE) 1.0 SP1

The Web Services Enhancements, or WSE, is an add-on to the .NET Framework to enhance Web service features by providing an API for many emerging Web service standards. From the Microsoft WSE Homepage:

"Web Services Enhancements (WSE) 1.0 Service Pack 1 provides support for security features such as digital signature and encryption, message routing capabilities, and the ability to include message attachments that are not serialized into XML. Functionality is based on the WS-Security, WS-Routing, WS-Attachments and DIME specifications."

These standards provide additional value to Web services. For example, WS-Security, provides means for encrypting Web service payloads, using digital certificates for authentication, and so on. WS-Attachments and DIME allow for attaching arbitrary (binary) data to Web service payloads; WS-Routing is for automatically routing Web services using SOAP intermediaries. In a separate download, WSE Settings Tool for VS.NET, you can provide built-in VS.NET support to help configure your Web services to utilize WSE. Microsoft provides abundant technical articles on using WSE that are invaluable for getting started
