First you need to understand What is SharePoint?
It's a web application by Microsoft which helps an organization to work more efficiently by allowing users to share documents/file/info.
You must aware of some of the following techniques:
A. Scripting Lang.:
HTML, CSS, Javascript, Angular.js, Knockout.js
B. Programming Lang.:
C# or VB.Net, ASP.NET Web Forms, LINQ, WCF
C. Design Patterns:
MVC, MVVM

At present in which platform you are working? If you are in Microsoft platform then you can easily adopt SharePoint, SharePoint you have 2 options
1) SharePoint Administrator
2) SharePoint Developer
If you are a .net background and you are involved in development activities then SharePoint Developer is the best option for you, if you are looking for configuration level and you want to perform admin level activities then SP Administrator is the best option for you.
In both the ways you can able to learn more, as well as career growth also good, but as compare to Administrator, SharePoint Developer having bright future, because all developers are indirectly involved in SP Administrator activities. So, they have full and full knowledge in all the accepts.
If you want to become an SharePoint Expert you have to do more practice on the same, so that only you can able to learn more and more.
