Creating virtual machines using Virtual Server

This chapter explains how to create virtual machines using Virtual Server software.

After you successfully install the Virtual Server software, the next step is to create the virtual machines. You can create any number of virtual machines depending upon the resource availability on your host computer.

Steps to create virtual machines

1. Launch the admin website

You can start the admin web site by accessing the windows start menu: Start > Programs > Microsoft Virtual Server > Virtual Server Administration

Alternatively, you can type the URL in Internet Explorer: http:///VirtualServer/VSWebApp.exe?view=1

2. Create Virtual machine

You can create a new Virtual Machine by selecting the menu option Virtual Machines > Create.

Specify the following parameters to create a new virtual machine:

Virtual Machine Name

Give any name you like (like DevServer1, DevServer2, QAServer1 etc). Include the full path so that the virtual machine settings file and virtual hard disk will be created in an easily accessible folder in your host computer.

Example: C:\MyVirtualMachines\DevServer1

If you do not specify the full path, the file will be stored in the default location (Documents & Settings folder)

Memory

Specify the amount of memory you want to reserve for the new virtual machine. The maximum limit depends upon the available memory on the host computer. Make sure you give sufficient memory for the virtual machine to run efficiently (512MB, for example). When you are running a virtual machine, the specified amount of memory will be used from the host computer.

Virtual hard Disk

If you have already created a virtual disk created using admin site or copied from somewhere else, you can choose the option "Use an existing virtual hard disk" and enter the full path of the disk file including file name with extension.

If you specify the Create new virtual hard disk option, it will create the hard disk file within the same path you specified for the Virtual Machine name. If you want the virtual hard disk to be stored in a different location, then you can specify the full path here.

Examples:

C:\VirtualMachines\DevServer1
C:\VirtualMachines\DevServer1.vhd
DevServer1
DevServer1.vhd

All the above options will work. The first 2 will create a virtual disk file called DevServer1 in the location C:\VirtualMachines\ in your host computer. Last 2 options will create the disk file with the same name, but it will be stored in a location you specified for the Virtual Machine name.

Virtual network adapter

If you want to connect to network/internet from your virtual machine, make sure you select a network card from the drop down.

Now press the 'Create' button to create the virtual machine. This process may take few seconds to complete. You will be redirected to a page which shows the status of the new virtual machine you created.

The above screenshot shows that we just created a virtual machine called "DevServer3". The icon on top left corner indicates that the virtual machine is "NOT STARTED". You can click on the icon to start it.

Also, note the .vmc file. This is the file saved on your host computer which includes the settings for the virtual machine you just created. You need this file to use your virtual machine. If you lose this file, you have to create a new virtual machine and use the existing disk file. However, your virtual machine data will not be lost as long as you safely keep the virtual disk.
