Introduction:

This is a continuation of my previous article on SQL Reporting services..... You can view that here

Report Server:

The report server consists of the following components

1. Programmatic interfaces
2. Report Processor.
3. Data Processing Extensions
4. Rendering Extensions
5. Delivery extensions

Programmatic Interfaces:

Programmatic interfaces are those that recieves all the requests at the report server.

Rendering Extensions

Rendering extensions are those that looks after the format in which the reports are rendered. The following rendering extensions are available in the SQL2000 Reporting services.

1. HTML Rendering extension
2. Excel Rendering Extension
3. CSV rendering extension
4. XML rendering extension
5. Image Rendering extensions
6. PDF rendering extensions

Data Processing Extensions

Generally data processing extensions perform the following activities.

1. open the data source
2. analyse the query given the user and pick up the fields
3. Run a query against a data source
4. returns the set of rows

Available Data processing extensions are:
1. SQL server data processing extension
2. OLEDB data processing extension
3. Oracle data processing extension
4. ODBC data processing extension
5. Analysis Services

Delivery Extensions

These are extn=esnions that allows the delivery of reports to different locations. You can probably deliver the reports via SMTP server or deliver it to a file server. Two extensions are used for this purpose.

1. E-Mail Delivery Extension
2. File Share Delivery Extension.

Summary:

Thus we have dealt in brief about the component architecture of reporting services. This is a new thing from microsoft and it seems that this will be integrated along with SQL server 2005.

Use an WebService DataSet as a Reporting Services Data Source. Now you can go beyond and expand the capabilities of your SQLRS using WebServices. Now you can create and run your report using WebServices as sources.
