"Visual Studio Team System" represents extended versions of Visual Studio .NET. It is usually called
VSTS
. It is a set of collaboration and development tools for software development process.
"Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition" is part of all Visual Studio team editions. In addition, the team system editions include several development and collaboration tools. Microsoft has introduced separate editions of Team System for various role members of the team. Each one of the below flavours have specialized tools for the corresponding roles:
1. Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Database Professionals
2. Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Software Architects
3. Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Software Developers
4. Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Software Testers
5. Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite (Includes all)
VSTS includes server components and client components. The server component is called ''''
Team Foundation Server
''''. All of the above editions include the Team Foundation Server Workgroup edition with up to 5 client licenses.
Team Foundation Server offers several features including:
1. Source control & version tracking
2. Defect tracking
3. Managing work items
4. Provides real-time reporting of various metrics
and more...
The client components includes
1. Visual Studio .NET Professional edition
2. "Team Explorer" which allow you to communicate with Team Foundation Server and track work items or work with source control.
3. Tools specific for various roles of the team (like unit testing, profiling, UML modelling etc). The specific tools are available depending on which Team System edition you purchase. The "Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite" includes all of them.
