This Article is meant only for beginners
In the Microsoft Server System we have different Types of Servers like SQL server, BizTalk server, Sharepoint Portal server, Content Management server, Project server, Commerce server, Exchange server etc
In this session I would like to discuss briefly on Project server…
I think most of the readers are aware of Microsoft Project Professional, which is again a Microsoft Product meant for Project planning and Tracking, Project Professional is a Desktop application form which we can create Project plan( .mpp) and assign resources and generating reports about the project with different types of data like resources, cost, time, work etc
But when comes to Microsoft Project server we can do all the stuff what we did with MS Project professional additionally, Microsoft Project server is a Centralized web application with in the organization which contains information about the project related stuff. The access to this Server is depends up on the Privilege you Have. To Login into the Project server Microsoft provided two methods/ tools
1)Microsoft Project Professional 2003 2)Microsoft Project web access
We can login to MS Project server only with Microsoft Project Professional 2003 or higher. How to connect to the Project server with my Project Professional: To connect to the project server we need to perform some clicks. Tools> Options > Collaborate
1)Select Collaborate using as “Microsoft Office Project server” 2)Type the project server URL and you can Click on “Test Connection” for a Test 3)You can mention the “ identification for Project server” as Windows user account 4)Then Press OK
Once if you connect to the Project server then you can play around by using Project Professional by creating a project file and assign resources etc..
How to publish a project into Project server: Collaborate> Publish> Project Plan (Note: At this time I expect lots of Quires but for all what we need to do is Trail and Error method only:))
When coming to the project web access, I can say Microsoft Project web access is UI part of Project Server. There are lots of options are provided my Microsoft but still we can customize our Project web access according to the access rights like (Team member, Leader, Project Manager, Resource Manager.. and so on up to Administrator)
With an administrator privilege the project web access will have the options like Home, Projects, Tasks, Resources, Status Reports, Updates, Risks, Issues, Documents and Admin. The highlighted features are integration with Outlook 2003 and Windows Sharepoint Services for email alerts about the task assignments, task updates, Milestones etc. When a Team member is updated his task with the Project Web Access the updated information about the task is automatically send through a mail to concern Team leader or manager.
When coming to the Windows Sharepoint services, as the name suggests it share the information across the Team about the projects. Sharing of information like Surveys, General Discussions, Shared Documents, and Pictures etc.
To use the Sharepoint services we need to integrate the Project server with the Sharepoint server if once that has been done, then we will get a unique Sharepoint Portal link for each and every published project in the project server with the project id. One can know the details of a particular project by hitting this link from the Favorites; he/she should be authorized to use this facility.
Conclusion: In this session I tried to give a Launching pad for the Project server, I hope I had given a little input to know about the Project server, to find more information Please go to MSDN and during the next session I want to discuss about the Sharepoint server.)
===== Thanks, Sriram
