This is a little note to review about HTML-Kit, which is a versatile web developer's toolkit for any developer. Instead of having to support shareware and other copyprotected programs illegally, I would say, we can breathe free to support a free software and also harness the greatness of this truly little-tool with great benefits.

Introduction

Sometime back we have been discussing about Chami.com website features and we briefly touched base about the various features of HTML-Kit. For the interested reader, the permalink of the thread is HTML-Kit -- Quick and Free Editor for Web-Development. Just after following a little-to-many queries on PHP and other stuff in Dotnetspider discussion forums, I just thought I would touch base on HTML-Kit's features in more detail for the benefit of all developers.

A rich formatted version of this post is also available at http://writer.zoho.com/public/deepakvasudevan/Elegant-Free-Web-IDEs

Situation

Since PHP is a free opensource language with simplicity in development and extensive power unleashed for a web application, more and more of businesses are moving towards it. However, people still try to use whatever editors they can make use for the same. I see my friends clinging onto the following editors in more number.

  • EditPlus

  • TextPad

These editors are more towards advanced text editing and also Java Programming language. Also, both are not free. I would recommend that unless the businesses are going to purchase the license and use the software with good heart, we should not abet or resort to using shareware for indefinite time. After all, the developers who made those software would have spent countless nights in the development efforts just like us. We should not resort to supporting illegal use of such applications.

Good Elegant IDE :: HTML-Kit

I came to know of HTML Kit sometime even four years back and even when I was joining my previous organization, they were happy to know about this free software. That time, I still remember, there was an ASP development based on Halcyonsoft instant ASP (iASP) running on Apache webserver.

With regards to PHP and other general web development the following are some good advantages of HTML-Kit. The little featureset reviewed below gently embraces the topic from this page.

The name is a misnomer. It is just not for editing HTML but just more than anything that you can dream under the sun.
Just little download size of about 3 mega bytes
1. Syntax Coloring ability for a large number of language sets:
2. Web Development: ASP/ASP.NET, C#/VB.NET, Perl, PHP,XML/XSL,JavaScript/JScript,Java Servlets/JSP
3. Pascal/Delphi
4.Platform independant File Saving. You can even configure the Toolbar Save As to directly save through FTP on an Unix Server through its workspace configuration.
5. Automatic File Recovery
6.Autobackup after a stipulated time
7. AutoSave
8. Configurable/Controllable Undo/Redo after Save
9. Rich Interface
10. MDI interface to open multiple documents"
10. 1 Easy to Manage Workspaces similar to Solution Explorer of Visual Studio
10.2 Integrated PHP Manual to http://www.php.net/ With little changes to configuration files, you can change the URL to point to downloaded offline PHP documentation also.

Its Role as Big Brother

1. Integrated HTML-Tidy for validating HTML documents
2. Integration of TopStyle for CSS validation
3. WebSafe Color Picker (Point and Pick Colors from Screen)
4. Word HTML Cleaner

Extensible

If we are not satisfied with the features, we can then write our own plugin using hkScript and HTML-Kit will happily follow those rules too.

Summary

Even the listing and review of the not-so-exhaustive list of features in HTML-Kit also makes me tired. I am pretty sure that HTML-Kit should be an essential tool in any (web) developer's toolkit.

I would say instead of resorting to using shareware applications beyond allowed period, it is better that we use a good powerful IDE which is free on the planet and comes as a great boon for us. Towards, this I am also collecting information on how to go about helping ourselves stay protected from software piracy and also how to contribute our might to contain software piracy. But that is another note. Stay Tuned!!
