Introduction

In a brief review, I am trying to address the effectiveness of the little known FTP tool called 'LeechFTP'. I have been using this for a while on my personal front. Recently one of my friend who runs a small browsing shop and a hosting company near Tambaram badly needed a reliable FTP tool. He was trying out Cute and other shareware solutions. After evaluating Leech, he was really convinced about the effective, secure and robust FTP capabilities of Leech FTP.

History of Leech FTP

I tried to find out the history of LeechFTP and it lands in this page of Denmark server (http://linux.fh-heilbronn.de/~debis/leechftp/). But currently this page is a 404. As far I could recall, LeechFTP is an academic product one a Denmark based student and is fully a freeware. I have been examining it Naviscope and Fiddler to ascertain whether it makes any spyware connections and for a prolonged time, it has'nt done any and is also a safe FTP product.

Leech FTP Features

  • Freeware; No shareware or other timebound licensing issues to bother

  • Multiple Connections to the FTP Server. But limit to 5 since both your client network pipe and the server network pipe would be overwhelmed

  • Concurrent File Transfer/File Browser. Child Threads do the file transfer while the parent thread does only controlling the child threads and File Browser job.

  • Integrated Archive Testing (Zip and RAR currently are supported)

  • Secured Password-Protected Bookmark

  • Unattended Upload from System Tray (including password protection)

  • Clipboard URL Monitor for Http Download support

  • Resumed Download Support

Summary

I would strongly suggest that Leech FTP is a very good FTP tool for us (web developers) for our routine uploading of files to the web server. Currently Leech FTP is no longer supported by the developers and hence there may not be direct support/fixes. But I do not think that should be a deterrant feature in using a very good tool. Let us try and use Leech FTP for securely storing the credentials and elegant, effective file transmissions.
