Cool Tools and Samples - Part 1

Developers that use .NET Framework SDK may find themselves in need of certain tools in order to simplify their work. Most of them are actually samples included within Visual Studio .NET. Here are some of them.

wordcount -
counts words from different files. Can be found in \Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET\FrameworkSDK\Samples\Applications\WordCount

installutil -
tool used to install Windows services that are built in C#. The generated application must include a ServiceInstaller? in order to be successfully used with installutil. Since it is a base tool, it is located in \WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\

Another set of really nice samples can be found in \Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET\FrameworkSDK\Samples\QuickStart\howto\samples. They treat all subjects related to .NET programming, from resource generation, through message mapping and up to .NET Remoting.

ConfigWizards -
The .NET Framework offers a set of three wizards to help developers. The .NET Security wizard sets security levels and options for certain areas of the network, allowing or blocking applications or components. The Trust Assembly wizard attempts to add certain application assemblies to the "Trusted" category, so that they will be allowed to execute and given permissions. Finally, the Restore Application wizard attempts to restore an assembly in case its links are broken. This tool can be found under \WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\.

winres -
a tool for localizing resources and creating culture-specific resources. Opens any ".resource" file. Can be found under \Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET\FrameworkSDK\bin

certmgr -
a tool used for managing certificates on a user-specific and purpose-specific basis. Can be found under \Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET\FrameworkSDK\bin
