Date Comparison

In a number of SQL statements that it is regular practice here to do the following type of date comparison:



SELECT *

FROM TABLE

WHERE DDATE = ’01 JAN 2008’;


This is considered in bad practice in the Oracle world.

The above query should be rewritten like this:

SELECT *

FROM TABLE

WHERE DDATE = TO_DATE (’01 JAN 2008’, ‘DD MON YYYY’);


Aside from the reasons listed below it also gives the Optimiser a better understanding of the data.
