When adding new columns with default values, set the default values with an ALTER statement after adding the columns as per the following example:

ALTER TABLE Customer

ADD

(

lastmodifieddate DATE ,
lastmodifieduser VARCHAR2(60),
createddate DATE ,
createduser VARCHAR2(60)

)

/

ALTER TABLE Customer

MODIFY( lastmodifieddate DATE DEFAULT SYSDATE)

/

ALTER TABLE oeiprice

MODIFY( createddate DATE DEFAULT SYSDATE)

/

Do not include the default values as part of the first statement.
It runs much much quicker and doesn’t hang the database.
