Time Stamp:
Time Stamp returns the VARBINARY data type data.

Select @@DBTS

Timestamp is actually the transaction identifier within the database. It is either a binary (8) or a varbinary(8) depending on null ability.

It is initialized when the database is created and is incremented whenever a modification occurs within the database. You can view the current value in @@dbts. It does not at all correlate to the time of day.

Way back yonder, Sybase could have more clearly named the data type Transaction Stamp or Transaction Id rather than imply that it has anything to do with time. Microsoft is planning to phase out the timestamp in favor of row version. That change has more to do with ANSI SQL-92 compliance than anything else. Both data types exist in SQL 2005.
