We need to create an area template because our portal is going to take advantage of the features included in SPS and not rely solely on WSS Team Sites.

How to create an area template

The following are the steps to create an area template
1. Go to
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\TEMPLATE\1033

2. Copy “SPSNEWS” folder and renaming it to SPSMYTMPLATE.

3. go to
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\TEMPLATE\1033\XML
here we need to make a new WEBTEMP*.XML file in this XML directory

4. Just copy the WEBTEMPSPS.XML file and rename it to WEBTEMPSPSMYTMPLATE.XML,
This name is the combination of WEBTEMPSPS (that exisiting XML File Name) and SPSMYTMPLATE ( the new template directory name),and delete one ‘SPS’
that is WEBTEMPSPSSPSMYTMPLATE --> WEBTEMPSPSMYTMPLATE

5. Edit the XML file to look like this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<Templates xmlns:ows="Microsoft SharePoint">
<Template Name=" SPSMYTMPLATE " ID="10001">
<Configuration ID="0" Title="My Template" Type="0" Hidden="TRUE" ImageUrl="../images/spshome.gif" Description="This template will test news and listings" />
</Template>
</Templates>

The ID will be recommended above the thousand, make sure the ID will be Unique.

6. Go to
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\TEMPLATE\1033\ SPSMYTMPLATE

7. Open the default.aspx in any editor and update this default.aspx according to your requirement

8. Finally Reset IIS

Now the new template (My Template) is available for creating an area
