Service is an application function that
• Within each request encompasses a complete parcel of work – which can be either Business or Technical.
• May stand of its own or be part of larger set of function to constitute a larger service but its cope is such that each request leaves the system in long term steady state.
• Is designed to provide a network accessible interface
• Is designed to receive requests from any source making no assumptions as to functional correctness (syntactic or semantic) of the incoming request

Service-oriented architecture is a style of design, deployment and management of software infrastructure and applications in which
• the primary functions of applications are organized into services,
• Service interface definitions are computer readable (e.g., for use by development tools),
• Quality of service characteristics, such as response time, security and transaction recovery are explicitly identified in the design of the architecture and

The core focus of this section is on “Business” services rather than technical services.
