XML is extensible markup language and is an open source.Practically speaking XML is just a container of data that is used to transfer data across a wide and dinstinct variety of platforms.A typical example of something built on XML is .Net web services.Like other markup languages XML also contains tags but unlike html these tags serve no specific purpose to the compiler and their purpose is just to carry data.Retrieval of data is very easily compare to a text file since a text file can only be read in a sequential manner while the xml document can be loaded in memory completely and all the node paths get compiled so that you can query the document for any node or node's parent or node's children or sublings etc.Lot is new languages have started to build on XML and the latest ones included in .Net 3.0 are XAML ( extensible application markup language) and XOML ( Extensible Object mark up language).
