Samsung have given us a glimpse of some of the technologies they're working on for their next generation mobile phones. According to Kang-Hun Lee, vice president of Samsung's Next-Generation Terminals Team, future mobile phones will have 5GHz processors, 10GB-20GB of memory, and will seamlessly move from one network to another, whether the network uses cellular, mobile WiMAX or other technologies.
All pretty standard stuff so far - these predictions are simply extensions of what current generation mobiles already offer. However, Lee didn't stop there with his predictions...
According to Lee, future handsets could come with flexible holographic displays, with their cameras capable of taking 3D holographic images. Lee predicts all this should come to pass by 2010, but is that likely?
Well, Samsung will be releasing a mobile phone that can switch seamlessly between Mobile WiMAX and GSM next year, while Nokia and others already offer phones that switch between WiFi and GSM. 10GB flash memory is inevitable and will surely make its way onto mobile phones before 2010.
As far as holographic imaging is concerned, here we'll have to trust Samsung's predictions. Current holographic technology has yet to make it to mainstream home gadgets, but Samsung is the company who put a 10 megapixel camera in its phone, so if anyone can pull this off, Samsung can.
One thing's for sure, mobile phone displays are going to have change soon if the increasing number of features being squeezed into their tiny forms are to be used by your average myopic user. Holographic displays might be one answer, but holographic projected displays, with the image beamed directly onto your (physical) desktop really would be even better. Be interesting to see what Samsung and the others have up their sleeves for the remainder of the decade
