Regular expressions are extremely fast in doing pattern matching in large blocks of text. .net supports regular expressions.

See the following code snippet which can be used to count the number of words in a text block.

string exp = "(.*?)" + word + "(.*?)";

Regex reg = new Regex( exp );

MatchCollection matches = Regex.Matches(text, exp, RegexOptions.IgnoreCase );
IEnumerator en = matches.GetEnumerator();

MessageBox.Show( matches.Count.ToString() );
