You can't compare it becuase Linq to sql is one of the derivative of Linq.

There are folloiwng derivatives of Linq

1) Linq to SQL
2) Linq to Dataset
3 Linq to object

Linq is used to perform operations against database but the linq statements are written in the code file and easy to write and understand. when you write some query in linq it gets converted to sql and then is performed on the database tables.

The basic difference between LINQ and SQL is that, in SQL you write queries specific to the vendors such as SQL Server,Oracle Server, mySql etc. and on top of that you have to do the Transformation of that to the fron end last but not the least you need to do the connection management.

But if you use LINQ - it all comes by default to you....You just need to know C# and how to query the Objects...

I hope this helps!.
