what is share point why it is used. I would like to know if anyone can explain something about SharePoint.

SharePoint is an enterprise information portal, from Microsoft, that can be configured to run Intranet, Extranet and Internet sites. Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 allows people, teams and expertise to connect and collaborate. SharePoint solves four main problems:
• As companies grow so does the amount of their files. It soon becomes difficult to keep track of the multiplying documents and their locations. SharePoint overcomes this by allowing you to store and locate your files in a central site. Files can also be located through company wide searches of your SharePoint enterprise portal.
• Sharing work files through email is a cumbersome process. SharePoint eliminates this by allowing files to be stored in one location, allowing easy access to all team members.
• Today’s work occurs over multiple locations, whether it is in different countries, office locations, separate departments or at your home office. SharePoint enables teams and individuals to connect and collaborate together regardless of where they are located.
• It’s difficult and time consuming to create and maintain sites. SharePoint allows anyone to create sites for use within their company’s Intranet, as they are needed, whether they are departmental sites, document libraries, meetings sites, survey sites, or discussion boards.

Hi,
SharePoints is an application or a preference pane that makes it easy to add and delete share points like in the old Finder. In Mac OS X, by default, you are limited to sharing only what is in your public folder in your home directory. This program makes it easy to share any folder.
In addition SharePoints also brings back users and groups management to Mac OS X as well as easy configuration of AppleFileServer (AFS) and Samba (SMB) Server properties.

We can create our own SharePoint site. It serves as a Point of contact to team members. While working together we have to manage and share some documents. Document Management is managing and sharing documents through the use of versioning and workflows.

share point is the portal collaboration software
Wherever the team will be there,we use sharepoint
It helps team members to connect and exchange the information.
In a typical organization,different people has different authorities to access data belongs to different department
All the data will be scattered in different files and documents.
The way to access data will also be different some may use mails,and others share the drive and access the data in intranet.
sharepoint unites all data into one centralized place and unites the data transport mechanism.So that we can create users and give authentication and authority to different users.
Microsoft Offfice sharepoint server 2007(MOSS)refered as Value added services.
sharepoint is divided into two products
1.Windows Sharepoint Services(WSS)
2.MOSS
Wss is a platform on which the MOSS is built to provide extra functionality to WSS like Working with MS Office
WSS doesnt work in isolation,it needs the help of IIS and SQL Server
