Since both are development tools, while java is a language and .net is a complete set of framework and languages, it would be difficult to say which will survive.
Being a .Net developer and covered java in my educational days, i find .Net very convenient and feature rich, but there is a very big code base written in Java which is there to stay and also Java is still considered more reliable partly because it is supported by linux platform, which is the server for many realtime and efficient systems.
For many trading systems, Server is in java while UI portion is being developed in .Net, i am myself part of one such project.
So i feel both are here to stay.

I Agree to Abhijeet!
We cannot decide which programming language is the best because at the end we have to create an application meeting some requirement that can be fullfilled by using any of the programming languages.
As for me .net is the best because of intrest and experince but this does not mean java is not good at all. i have seen and made application using java which perform better than .net applications and i have also created applications in .net that perform better than Java.
So This Debate will never end.

Yeah both are beautifully built development tools.
So its dificult to tell which survives any how lets wait and see:)

Hi,
Java has some specific advantage or disadvantage and in the same ways dot net also have some advantage and disadvantages.
Java will run in any plat form
Development in Java will take time.
Dotnet cannot support multiple platform as of now completly.
dot net is having rich set of tools to develop and the support for .net is more or less equal to .net. compared to java .net is most developer paradise.
We need to see the future developement of both the language.

I've just joined a company and where you can choose java or dot net.I asked this because i need to make a choice. Which IDE are you using for java application NetBeans or Eclipse ?.

Hi,
Both the technology ie Java and .Net are used for building similar type of application.
In other words we can say both are rivals to each other..Net is somewhat easy to easy to learn as it is a Microsoft product whereas Java is little bit difficult to learn.
.Net supports more than 23 languages so you can choose any one in which you are comfortable with but that is not available in Java.
So its completely up to you which technology you choose.Both will be remain in the market so you don't need to worry about it.
