error in javascript

I am assigned a module where i have a HTML table and controls...The values i give in the controls will get added to the database first and then will be appended to the HTML table...The records in the database will be loaded to the HTML page in Pageload..But the newly added record is appended to the HTML table without any interaction with the database that is appended to the HTML table from the controls itself...
My problem is that when there are no records in database and i add a fresh record i get an error
'null' is null or not an object. and the newly added record is added only to database not to HTML table. But when i refresh the page it id loadded in the HTML table too..This occurs only when there are no records in database ...Could anybody tell what is wrong?
